Position Description


The Senior Scrum Master guides and coaches the team on how to use Agile practices and principles to deliver high-quality products, and services for our customers and business partners. Encourages team to become high-performing by recognizing areas of strength and improvement and employing appropriate coaching and development techniques.


Scrum Master enables and empowers their teams by leading by example, removing impediments, and maximizing their team’s efficiency.


The Scrum Master helps those outside the team understand which of their interactions with the team are helpful and which are not.


The Scrum Master helps everyone change these interactions to maximize the value created by the squad. Living the Agile principles and values.


General Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Exhibits Lean-Agile leadership Exhibits the behaviors of a Lean-Agile Leader with an Agile mindset. (Agile Principles and Values)

  • Help the team embrace Agile core values, adopt, and apply Agile principles, and implement Agile practices.

  • Supports the Team rules- These may include the rules of the Team Agreement, built-in Quality practices from XP, work in progress and any other process rules the Team has agreed.

  • Facilitates the team’s progress toward the Sprint and Team goals- the Scrum Master is trained as a team facilitator and is continuously engaged in challenging the old norms of development to improve performance in the areas of quality, predictability, flow, and velocity. They help the team focus on creating increments of value for each sprint and achieving daily and sprint goals in the context of the current project objectives.

  • Leads Team efforts in relentless improvement -Help the team improve and take responsibility for their actions; facilitates the team retrospective.

  • Proactively works and supports the Product Owner. The Scrum Master helps the Product Owner in their efforts to manage the backlog and guide the team while facilitating a healthy team dynamic for priorities and scope on backlog and support of the team.

  • Responsible for ensuring Scrum is understood and the team adheres to Scrum theory, practice, and guidelines.

  • Teaches problem-solving techniques and helps the team become better problem-solvers themselves.

  • Facilitates events- Facilitates team events, including (where applicable) the Daily Stand Up, Spring Planning, Sprint review, and Sprint Retrospective, ensuring they are productive and kept within the timebox.

  • Facilitates the removal of impediments- Many blocking issues may be beyond the Team’s authority or may require support from other teams. The Scrum master supports the team in addressing and eliminating these issues to improve the likelihood of achieving the objectives of the sprint.

  • Builds a high-performing team -Focuses on ever-improving the team dynamics and performance and coaches the team in self-management.

  • Help the team resolve interpersonal conflicts and challenges and identify growth opportunities.

  • Supports estimating story points/work effort and complexity required based on the historical team velocity-guides the team in establishing normalized estimates and helps understand how to estimate epics and stories.

  • Promotes Agile quality practices- guide teams to constantly improve the quality of their deliverables and meet the Definition of Done.

  • Coaches the Scrum team in self-organization, cross-functional skill set, and domain knowledge and communicates effectively, both internally and externally working with the Scrum Team.

  • Resolves team impediments with other Scrum Master’s and Product Owners to increase the effectiveness of the application of Scrum in the organization.

  • Works with Agile coaches and other Scrum Masters to grow within the role.

  • Contributes to the advancement and improvement of Agile practices within the organization.

  • Outstanding communication, facilitation, collaboration, and coaching skills

  • Knowledge of Agile Frameworks

  • Adept at refinement, story splitting, estimation, velocity, retrospection, and other Agile Techniques

  • Planning and problem-solving with product management and delivery teams

  • Must be organized, self-motivated, highly adaptable, and have an ardent desire to embrace change.

  • Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills. Engages daily with the team and helps them.

  • Outstanding leadership and motivational skills- possessing a willingness to empower as well as inspire commitment and positive attitude in the team.

  • Think of the big picture, beyond the day-to-day activities; practice system thinking

  • Comfortable presenting to and working with Executive in Business and Tech

Education and/or Experience:



  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a relevant field preferred.

  • 3+ years of experience as a scrum master or in a similar role.

  • Working knowledge of agile methodology, techniques, and frameworks, such as Scrum or Kanban, to deliver solutions.

  • Leadership and management experience.

  • Excellent people and project management skills.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


Reports To: Director of the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO)
