Summary
The NHL Stats & Information team provides support in the development and execution of editorial and statistical content for internal and external stakeholders (Rightsholders, Member Clubs, NHL Executives, fans and media) and maintains the accuracy of League statistics.
The NHL Statistics Researcher is an integral part of the in-game NHL Stats & Information team, providing team support through research and auditing of League statistics. Primary responsibilities include proactive and reactive research; data analysis and distribution; as well as reviewing and resolving scoring audits.
This is a remote role with varying hours (often working until approximately 2 a.m. ET) and shifts (including weekends and holidays). The ability to work unsupervised is essential, as is a comfort with working on deadline. Only applicants eligible to work in Canada will be considered.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Contribute to an in-game team that handles proactive and reactive research, maintains the accuracy of League statistics in real time and contributes to editorial documents published daily.
- Use various research tools, including a proprietary query engine, to generate relevant statistics and information, primarily for use in real-time by NHL staff, Rightsholders and Member Clubs.
- Review and resolve scoring audits, working with multiple parties including NHL Hockey Operations and Off-ice Officials to correct and maintain the League’s official scoring database.
- Identify key statistics that will drive storylines on social media, broadcast and other news outlets while working in unison with internal NHL properties such as Public Relations, Social Media and the Hockey Operations Department.
- Apply an extensive knowledge of and passion for NHL players, teams and records to find unique and relevant statistics and information for hockey fans and media.
- Respond in a timely fashion, with thorough and accurate results, to requests from 32 Member Clubs, League employees, Rightsholders and media.
- Create reports, Excel spreadsheets and other publications as necessary.
- Relay relevant statistics and information to other members of the Communications team pertaining to trending topics on social media.
The ideal NHL Statistics Researcher is:

- Able to work a varied schedule based around the League’s game schedule and seasonal calendar (this will almost exclusively be evenings, weekends and holidays)
- Be able to identify research opportunities while examining box scores, watching hockey broadcasts and following online conversation revolving around players and games
- Demonstrate an understanding of NHL history and be able to quickly place statistical achievements into historical context
- Have a high comfort level working professionally in a virtual setting
- Successful completion of post-secondary education
- Experience working in an in-game or other live-entertainment environment is an asset
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Proficiency in French a plus
- Ability to think on your feet and quickly solve problems is a must
- Ability to multi-task and reprioritize over the course of a game night as situations develop
- Familiarity with computer database queries or other advanced technical skills a plus
