Technical Consultant (Construction Investigator)

About The Role

We’re looking for a Technical Consultant (Construction Investigator) who’s curious, analytical, and thrives in environments where the answer isn’t obvious. This is a client-facing role focused on problem-solving—digging into building issues, documenting what happened, and helping attorneys, insurers, and property owners make smart decisions.

At PFCS, we investigate construction claims and disputes. Our work blends field inspections, technical analysis, cost estimating, and written reporting. You’ll work alongside builders, architects, and engineers, learning how to translate real-world construction knowledge into clear, defensible conclusions.

If you're a seasoned project manager, superintendent, estimator, or inspector ready to pivot into consulting—this might be the career path you’ve been looking for.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform Site Inspections: Document construction defects, damage, or failures with detailed photos, notes, and diagrams.
  • Analyze Documents: Review contracts, change orders, daily logs, depositions, expert reports, and building codes/standards.
  • Cost Estimating & Analysis: Prepare scopes of work, estimates, cost comparisons, and RFPs.
  • Technical Reporting: Draft reports that synthesize observations, analysis, and cost estimates—delivered with PFCS quality standards.
  • Client Interaction: Participate in client meetings and mediations, capture accurate meeting notes, and communicate follow-up actions.
  • Billing & Accountability: Track billable hours on every project and meet monthly targets.
  • Professional Development: Set quarterly growth goals with management, pursue training, and apply new skills to support company objectives.

What Makes You a Fit

  • 10+ years of hands-on construction experience (PM, superintendent, estimator, inspector) OR a combination of education and field experience.
  • Skilled at reading drawings, scopes, and specs; able to evaluate work and communicate findings clearly.
  • Strong writing and communication skills—you’ll be doing a lot of both.
  • Detail-oriented and deadline-driven with excellent time management.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and online research tools. Comfortable learning new systems and following established processes.
  • Capable of performing the physical requirements of site inspections.
  • Experience as a self-directed, independent leader with strong project management skills.

Bonus Points For

  • Forensic or investigative construction experience.
  • Background in defect claims, expert witness work, or insurance consulting.
  • Licenses or certifications (GC, ICC, PE, AIA, PMP, etc.).
  • Knowledge of building sciences.

Why Work Here

PFCS is built for people who want to grow. We’re a team of builders, architects, and engineers who believe in being clear, thorough, and fair—especially when the stakes are high. We don’t just deliver reports—we help our clients understand what happened and what to do next.

We operate with integrity, invest in our team’s development, and take pride in being the calm, competent voice in the room. We work hard, stay curious, and support each other along the way.
