The Senior Associate Director of Philanthropy (Sr. ADoP) reports to the Director of Major Gifts and will be a key member of Nature United’s externally focused fundraising team. This position plays a vital role in supporting the success of our $300 million campaign, with a particular focus on cultivating new donor relationships in the Toronto region.

The Sr. ADoP will be responsible for growing their portfolio of major gift donors and prospects through qualification and cultivation of potential supporters, with the support of research and referrals and introductions from senior volunteers, board members and organizational leadership. The Sr. ADoP will collaborate across a team of supports to develop donor-focused proposals, budgets and impact reports.

This role requires a proactive, relationship-driven professional who can effectively communicate Nature United’s conservation and climate priorities. They fundraise for all of Nature United’s work and will display curiosity and self-motivation to learn and communicate conservation goals to donors and prospects. The Sr. ADoP will engage major gift level donors through personalized outreach, meetings, presentations and events. They will play a lead role in identifying and cultivating new funding opportunities, helping to expand our reach and impact through strategic donor engagement with individuals, foundations and corporate funders.

Nature United offers a flexible work environment; this position may be based from a home office or our Toronto office, but the successful candidate must reside in the Greater Toronto Area to support in-person donor engagement.

Responsibilities and Scope

  • Build and manage a portfolio of 60-100 qualified donors and prospects including those with the capacity to give $250,000+ through one time or multi-year gifts.
  • Annual fundraising goal of $1,000,000+ once the portfolio is fully developed.
  • Collaborate with the Major Gifts team to build a major donor pipeline, including qualifying and disqualifying leads.
  • Develop and execute thoughtful strategies to engage, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop cases, proposals, budgets and reports.
  • Understand and comply with all Nature United gift-related policies and procedures and ensure ethical compliance, as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
  • Demonstrate an active commitment to being in right relations with Indigenous Peoples through philanthropy practices within the team and fundraising community more broadly.
  • Bring an active commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice and contribute to a culture of inclusion and belonging.
  • Readily take on additional responsibilities as this growing philanthropy program evolves into one of Canada’s leading development teams.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors.
  • Experience in asking and closing gifts of $250,000 or more.
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Experience working with senior level volunteers.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience, coursework or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
  • Ability to travel within the Toronto region for meetings and events, and up to 4 trips annually within Canada and the US.

Desired Qualifications

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Eagerness to participate in cultural competency training and advancing right relations with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Curious and self-motivated to understand domestic and global conservation issues and become adept at linking the two

Salary Information

The estimated starting salary for this position is dependent on experience, qualifications and location.

  • Salary range is: $123,000 - $134,000 CAD annually
