Description Of Job

Term Limited Position: This position is term limited with an anticipated end date of approximately two years from the date of hire. This position is eligible for State employee benefits and may be extended as the situation warrants. Are you looking for an opportunity to combine your love of data, and work for the great State of Colorado? If so, as our new data engineer you will be responsible for designing, creating, maintaining, and optimizing data infrastructure for data collection, management, transformation, and access. You will be in charge of creating pipelines that convert raw data into usable formats for data consumers to utilize as well as maintaining the infrastructure and pipelines that allow our organization to collect, process, and analyze data.

Specific Duties Include

Designing systems : Creating systems for collecting, storing, and analyzing data.

Building data pipelines : Connecting information from different systems into a single pipeline.

Cleansing data : Integrating, consolidating, and cleansing data to make it usable.

Securing data : Managing and storing data to protect it from loss or theft.

Scaling data : Considering how to scale the system if the amount of data grows.

Connecting to cloud : Connecting OIT’s business systems to cloud-based systems.

C reating models: Creating models to analyze data faster and more accurately.

Monitoring data management costs: Tracking day to day warehouse use for costs and tuning processes for cost optimization.

Supporting Analytics: Uses intermediate to advanced SQL, creating analytics ready data objects to support standard and advanced analytics.

Creating Batch Processes: Uses intermediate to advanced SQL, creating data batch processes which support division units to work more efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights

A wide salary range is posted for this position and any job offer is based upon a salary analysis to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The salary analysis considers relevant experience, education, certifications, and state seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. While all offers are compliant with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, there is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

This is a skills-based job announcement. The required minimum qualifications and/or education (if substituting for the proven experience, knowledge, and skills), are as follows:

A minimum of three years (3) of experience in software development, data science, data engineering, ETL, and analytics reporting development

A minimum of one year (1) of experience designing, building, implementing, and maintaining data and system integrations using dimensional data modeling and development and optimization of ETL pipelines.

A minimum of one year (1) of experience designing, building, implementing, and maintaining data and system integrations and data transformations utilizing Snowflake.

Demonstrated proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL)

Substitutions

Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.

Training or Certification related to the work assigned to the position will be assigned credit towards substitution for experience and/or education, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.

If the minimum qualifications include a degree requirement, additional appropriate paid or unpaid experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience working for a government agency.

Experience with Python, R or other programming languages used in data engineering.

Experience with Snowflake, Informatica, MuleSoft, AWS Glue is a plus.

Experience with CI / CD and source control platforms like Azure DevOps.

Experience with the public sector, especially with the business domain of labor and employment.

Familiarity with data governance frameworks and tools.

Experience with data visualization tools like Tableau, or Power BI is a plus.

Knowledge of other cloud platforms like AWS, GCP or Azure.

Conditions Of Employment

OIT employees must comply with any screening procedures in place at state entity locations where they might be required to perform work.

A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.

Positions supporting some agencies such as the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety will also require a pre-employment drug test.

This position may require travel within the specified geographic area, and to locations across the state as needed.

Supplemental Information

If this posting indicates “remote from anywhere in CO” in the title, periodic reporting to the primary state work location designated for the position is required. All remote work must be performed in Colorado.

While candidates from out of state will be considered for this role, the candidate selected for the position must relocate and reside in Colorado on the first day of their new position. A reasonable timeframe for relocation will be established on an individual basis, while considering business needs, and determining a start date.
