The Opportunity: The Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun newsroom has an immediate opening for a reporter who will help set the news agenda and drive robust coverage of the federal public service. There are more than 150,000 public servants in the National Capital Region. The public service reporter will explore the relationship between the bureaucracy and Canada's capital, examine workplace issues that affect civil servants, help explain how the business of government is adapting and changing, and hold those who lead it to account.

What you’ll do:

  • Create engaging, original journalism about the federal public service and federal institutions in the national capital
  • Build trust with sources within the public service to tell their stories and break news.
  • Sift through data and online resources to find hidden, untold stories.
  • Work collaboratively with editors, photographers, and digital producers to present those stories.
  • Balance same-day news stories with longer enterprise features, profiles, and investigations.

Who you are:

  • A hard working, entrepreneurial team player.
  • Able to research and collect information from both traditional and non-traditional sources.
  • An excellent communicator, with well above average writing skills, able to break down complex issues into clear, accessible, lively and engaging language.
  • Able to develop a solid network of sources.
  • Enthusiastic about experimenting with emerging storytelling platforms.
  • Interested in listening to and learning from readers.

Qualifications:

  • A journalism degree or significant work experience in the media.
  • Experience working in a daily news environment.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
  • A valid G driver’s license.
