Description

To provide technical support and guidance to Meat Institute members in the areas of animal health, animal handling and welfare.

Position Requirements

  • PhD, DVM or advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Food industry or regulatory policy experience preferred.

Requirements

  • Provides timely assistance, analysis, guidance, and technical support for the beef, pork, lamb, veal, and poultry packing and processing industry on various topics including animal production, health, handling, and welfare; foreign animal disease; veterinary drugs; and pathology.
  • Serves as staff liaison to the Animal Welfare Committee and provides primary management of committee activities and membership, as well as task forces and work groups assembled for Meat Institute initiatives, ensuring members are provided a forum for discussing issues, sharing best practices, and establishing industry-wide positions, as needed. Oversees the Animal Welfare Guidelines and Audit, managing updates and recertification.
  • Provides technical support to other committees, as needed.
  • Represents Meat Institute regarding animal health and welfare at external meetings and before government agencies, including FSIS, APHIS, FDA, and other organizations.
  • Creates and leads or participates in coalitions involving other trade associations, organizations, companies, and agencies, as necessary.
  • Serves as liaison between Meat Institute and professional veterinary and animal health and welfare organizations, such as AVMA, AABP, AASV, USAHA and SHIP.
  • Provides coverage for immediate response to potential or actual crisis events related to animal health, welfare, or biosecurity issues.
  • Stays abreast of emerging issues and advancements in animal health and welfare, and communicates this information to Meat Institute members and staff.
  • Assists with developing content and educational materials, publishing briefing materials for members and media, and communicating Meat Institute activities.
  • Travels up to 20-30% of the time.
