Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Transportation, the Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safety of pedestrians, particularly school children, by assisting them to safely cross the road at designated locations. This position involves directing traffic, communicating with pedestrians and drivers, and fostering a safe and orderly crossing environment by ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Enjoy working outdoors, capable of standing for extended periods and working in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to make quick, sound decisions in high-traffic situations.
  • Strong ability to identify potential hazards and respond proactively and to assess traffic patterns and pedestrian movement for safe crossings.
  • Have access to transportation as you may be placed at different areas within the City.
  • Prior experience in a crossing guard, traffic control, or public safety role would be an asset.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with pedestrians, drivers, and community members.
  • Available shifts are between 7:00am to 9:15am and/or 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Also, some crossings have a lunchtime shift from 10:30am to 12:00pm.
  • Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Record Check.
  • Bilingual would be an asset.

If selected for this role, you will need to provide:

  • Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Proof of certifications
