About Rippling

Rippling gives businesses one place to run HR, IT, and Finance. It brings together all of the workforce systems that are normally scattered across a company, like payroll, expenses, benefits, and computers. For the first time ever, you can manage and automate every part of the employee lifecycle in a single system.

Take onboarding, for example. With Rippling, you can hire a new employee anywhere in the world and set up their payroll, corporate card, computer, benefits, and even third-party apps like Slack and Microsoft 365—all within 90 seconds.

Based in San Francisco, CA, Rippling has raised $1.4B+ from the world’s top investors—including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, Sequoia, Greenoaks, and Bedrock—and was named one of America's best startup employers by Forbes.

We prioritize candidate safety. Please be aware that all official communication will only be sent from @Rippling.com addresses.

About The Role

Rippling is a leading Employer of Record (EOR) provider, enabling businesses to hire globally while ensuring compliance with local labor laws and regulations. When EOR customers grant equity to these employees, it introduces complex payroll, tax, and reporting requirements—because Rippling is the legal employer, but the equity is granted by the customer. Rippling's EOR Equity Services team ensures this is handled correctly.

The Payroll Specialist, EOR Equity Services will join this growing team, reporting to the Manager, EOR Equity Services. This is a foundational role on a small, specialized team responsible for supporting equity-related payroll and compliance operations for EOR customers and employees across multiple countries.

Your payroll expertise is the foundation, equity is the domain you will apply it to. When EOR customers grant stock options or RSUs to their employees, those events create taxable income that must flow through payroll correctly, and that is where you come in. Day-to-day, you will:

  • Advise customers on how to enter equity-related items into payroll
  • Process equity income through pay runs and review pay statements for accuracy
  • Work with engineering when system errors arise
  • Partner with tax advisors to ensure items are taxed appropriately across jurisdictions
  • Perform calculations to validate withholding and reporting

Prior equity experience is beneficial but not required. What matters is strong payroll fundamentals and the ability to learn new domains quickly.

How This Role Is Different

Unlike traditional payroll roles, this position applies payroll expertise to a specialized and growing domain—equity compensation within the EOR model. Key distinctions:

  • Equity as the domain, not the discipline: You are not managing equity plans, cap tables, or grant documentation. You are the technical expert ensuring that equity-related income is correctly captured, taxed, and reported through payroll.
  • Translating equity into payroll logic: Your core challenge is applying rigorous payroll standards to complex equity events—selecting correct earnings codes, performing withholding calculations, and ensuring pay statement accuracy across multiple countries.
  • Navigating EOR-specific nuances: Because Rippling is the legal employer but the client grants the equity, you will advise customers on how to operationalize their equity events within the EOR payroll framework, bridging the gap between their equity plans and local regulatory obligations.

What You Will Do

Equity payroll operations and customer advisory

  • Advise customers on how to correctly report equity-related taxable income in payroll, including which earnings codes to use, how to enter taxable amounts, and how to handle regular pay runs, off-cycle payroll, and payroll corrections.
  • Process equity-related payroll entries for EOR employees, including stock option exercises and RSU vesting, ensuring equity income is configured correctly for local tax and social contribution treatment.
  • Review pay statements to confirm equity income, tax withholding, and employer contributions are reflected accurately.
  • Perform calculations to validate withholding amounts, net pay impacts, and employer cost for equity-related payroll events.
  • Explain equity-related payroll outcomes to customers and employees, including:
    • How equity income is treated as imputed income and used solely to calculate tax withholding
    • Why equity income may not result in a net cash payment
    • How employer and employee withholdings are calculated
    • How equity income and taxes appear on pay statements and annual wage reporting
  • Help customers understand applicable tax withholding approaches for equity income by country, including the use of maximum or supplemental rates where required.

Equity compliance filings

  • Support equity-related compliance filings (e.g., UK ERS returns, Ireland RSS1, Australia ESS) as needed, including data preparation, review, and submission coordination.
  • Work alongside the filings-focused specialist to ensure coverage and backup across the team—both specialists are expected to cross-train and provide mutual support.
  • Assist with collecting and validating required equity and payroll data from customers, internal teams, and third-party providers ahead of filing deadlines.
  • Track filing confirmations, acknowledgements, and follow-up inquiries from tax authorities, supporting corrections or resubmissions as required.
  • Maintain trackers, standard operating procedures, and internal reference materials related to equity payroll reporting, filings, and compliance processes.

What You Will Have

  • 5+ years of experience in payroll operations, tax compliance, or a related role, with hands-on experience processing or supporting multi-country payroll inputs for non-cash or imputed income (such as benefits-in-kind, equity, relocation, or other taxable fringe benefits).
  • Familiarity with how non-cash compensation or taxable benefits flow through payroll, impact withholding, and appear on pay statements and annual wage reporting. Experience with equity types (NSOs, RSUs) is beneficial but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Comfort performing payroll calculations and validating withholding amounts, net pay, and employer costs.
  • Experience troubleshooting payroll system issues and working with engineering or technical teams to resolve errors.
  • Ability to interpret legal or tax guidance and translate it into clear, practical payroll and operational steps.
  • Clear, confident written communication skills, with comfort explaining complex payroll concepts to customers and non-expert audiences.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and comfort managing complex data sets, deadlines, and cross-functional dependencies.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment with evolving processes.
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including working with large data sets, formulas, lookups, and pivot tables, along with experience using case management systems (e.g., Salesforce).
