Position Summary

The Flour Mill Community Farm Intern will support day-to-day farm operations, community food programming, and sustainability initiatives at the Flour Mill Community Farm.

This role combines hands-on urban agriculture, food preservation, community outreach, and local food systems education. The intern will help grow and distribute fresh, affordable produce, support workshops and events, and contribute to reThink Green’s broader goals of strengthening food security, youth empowerment, climate resilience, and community connection in the Flour Mill neighbourhood. This position is funded in part by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC)

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, planting, watering, weeding, maintenance, harvesting, and general care of crops at the Flour Mill Community Farm.
  • Apply sustainable and regenerative agriculture practices, including composting, crop rotation, ecological pest management, soil health practices, and waste diversion.
  • Support weekly farm markets, food distribution, and pay-what-you-can produce access for community members.
  • Assist with food preservation activities such as fermentation, pickling, drying, freezing, and safe storage to reduce food waste and extend the use of farm-grown produce.
  • Support the development of farm-to-table menu ideas and community food programming using locally grown ingredients.
  • Help coordinate and deliver community workshops, farm tours, outreach activities, and intergenerational learning opportunities.
  • Welcome and engage community members, seniors, youth participants, volunteers, partners, and visitors in a respectful and inclusive manner.
  • Participate in communications, marketing, and outreach efforts, including helping promote farm activities, markets, workshops, volunteer opportunities, and local food systems through community networks, newsletters, posters, and social media channels.
  • Track farm activities, produce yields, food waste, composting efforts, market participation, and other program outcomes as required.
  • Conduct research on local food systems, climate resilience, food security, and sustainability practices relevant to the Sudbury region.
  • Contribute to a final report summarizing activities, outcomes, insights, and recommendations to improve sustainability and reduce the farm’s carbon impact.

Qualifications And Skills

  • Interest in urban agriculture, food security, sustainability, climate action, community development, or environmental education.
  • Comfort working outdoors in a range of summer weather conditions and performing physical tasks such as lifting, bending, carrying, watering, and weeding.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including youth, seniors, newcomers, volunteers, community partners, and low-income residents.
  • Reliable, organized, adaptable, and willing to learn new skills in a hands-on environment.
  • Experience with gardening, farming, cooking, food preservation, community programming, or working with youth or seniors is considered an asset.
  • Some communications experience, including creating or supporting social media content, is considered an asset.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to assist with recordkeeping, research, and reporting.

Working Conditions

This position is primarily based outdoors at the Flour Mill Community Farm and may involve physical labour, including planting, harvesting, carrying supplies, setting up markets or workshops, and working in changing weather conditions. Some indoor or administrative work may be required for research, reporting, planning, communications, and food preservation activities.

About The Flour Mill Community Farm

The Flour Mill Community Farm is an urban farm in Greater Sudbury’s Flour Mill neighbourhood that supports food security, youth employment, environmental sustainability, and community connection. The farm grows fresh produce using ecological practices and helps make healthy food more accessible through community markets and local partnerships. The farm is also a gathering place for learning, volunteering, skill-building, and intergenerational connection.

Eligibility Criteria

An Eligible Candidate Is Someone Who

  • is either a new entrant into the workforce, is transitioning to a new career, or is unemployed or underemployed and is entering a new field;
  • has not previously participated in NOHFC’s People & Talent Program;
  • is at least 18 years of age;
  • resides in Northern Ontario;
  • is legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Note – The candidate must reside in Greater Sudbury and be available to start on-site Monday July 27, 2026.
