Job Title: Director of Marketing - Green Ventures & Partnerships

Department: Green Ventures & Partnerships

Location: Los Angeles, Washington D.C., or Remote

Reports To: Chief, Green Ventures & Partnerships

Supervises: N/A

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of interdependence. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel injustice, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our future. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it. Sierra Club has close to 800 staff across the country and a network of 64 local chapters that are led and fueled by thousands of volunteers. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with three labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: The Sierra Club is seeking a high-energy, mission-aligned Director of Marketing – Green Ventures & Partnerships to lead bold, strategic marketing and communications efforts that elevate our green business initiatives, corporate partnerships, impact investors and values-driven fundraising campaigns. This is a unique opportunity for a creative, collaborative, and data-savvy leader who thrives in fast-paced nonprofit environments and knows how to drive impact with purpose and innovation. This role is instrumental in shaping and executing marketing strategies for fundraising events, promotional campaigns, and department-wide visibility initiatives that amplify our environmental mission, engage diverse audiences, and inspire action.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Marketing Strategy & Campaign Execution
  • Develop and implement integrated marketing strategies that drive revenue, participation, and awareness for Green Ventures and Partnerships (GVP) fundraising events and campaigns.
  • Lead event campaign rollouts across channels, managing timelines and calendars to ensure effective execution.
  • Create and manage marketing plans that support both flagship and emerging events, with a strong focus on environmental values and measurable social impact.
  • Coordinate cross-channel promotional campaigns (social media, radio, TV, digital, print), including promotions like ticket giveaways and earned media placements
  • Department Branding & Visibility.
  • Build compelling, on-brand pitch decks and presentation materials to support fundraising, sponsorship, impact investing and stakeholder engagement efforts
  • Elevate the profile of the Green Ventures & Partnerships department through targeted storytelling, strategic content, and audience-first messaging
  • Gather market and audience insights to enhance communications and demonstrate impact to sponsors, donors, and the public
  • Creative Content & Communications
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of digital content across web, email, and social media platforms. Maintain a consistent and engaging voice across all platforms, ensuring timely updates and alignment with organizational branding
  • Develop high-quality visuals and written content that tell emotionally compelling stories and inspire environmental action. Maintain strong communication with internal and external writers, designers, and media professionals to ensure clarity, timeliness, and creative excellence
  • Collaborative Leadership & Cultural Impact.
  • Serve as a key thought partner across departments, translating complex programs and ideas into accessible, resonant narratives.
  • Work closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure brand consistency, campaign alignment, and integrated messaging. Drive cultural relevance and awareness by leveraging media, the arts, and entertainment to promote Sierra Club initiatives and shared environmental values
  • Performance Analysis & Optimization.
  • Monitor and analyze marketing and campaign performance across channels, using data to refine strategies and improve outcomes.
  • Develop actionable insights and recommendations to increase engagement, visibility, and fundraising effectiveness

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:

  • 5+ years of experience or equivalent in a relevant role with emphasis in marketing, communications, or brand strategy, ideally within nonprofit, environmental, or social impact sectors
  • Demonstrated success in creating and executing marketing strategies for fundraising events and high-impact campaigns
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple timelines and deliverables simultaneously
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual storytelling skills
  • Proficiency in digital marketing, content strategy, and social media management
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams and external collaborators
  • Experience with media campaigns and working with entertainment/cultural influencers is a strong plus
  • Passion for environmental justice, sustainability, and the Sierra Club’s mission
  • Committed to evolution. You are committed to continuously deepening and evolving your own understanding of systems of oppression through study, openness, and humility. And you easily recognize your own relationship to privilege and power, examining and shifting your behaviors as appropriate
  • Uplifting and additive. You see mistakes as opportunities for growth; problems as catalysts for solutions, and inspire others along the journey. You carry a constructive approach, can-do attitude, a sense of humor, and authentic kindness wherever you go

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:
