The role
We're looking for an accomplished and well-rounded Data Scientist to help us build innovative personal auto pricing models and process telematics data for signal processing and feature engineering. This role reports to our Data Science Director and will be a key contributor to the development of new pricing models that align with Quanata's mission to revolutionize transportation risk prediction. You'll work closely with a collaborative team of data scientists, using cloud-based notebooks, proprietary modeling libraries and version control systems to deliver impactful results that drive the future of risk prediction.

The role
We're looking for an accomplished and well-rounded Data Scientist to help us build innovative personal auto pricing models and process telematics data for signal processing and feature engineering. This role reports to our Data Science Director and will be a key contributor to the development of new pricing models that align with Quanata's mission to revolutionize transportation risk prediction. You'll work closely with a collaborative team of data scientists, using cloud-based notebooks, proprietary modeling libraries and version control systems to deliver impactful results that drive the future of risk prediction.
Your day-to-day
- Design, build, and refine personal auto insurance pricing models, leveraging historical data to improve prediction accuracy.
- Develop and implement feature engineering pipelines for telematics data, including signal processing techniques to extract actionable insights.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including actuarial, product, and data engineering teams, to integrate models and data into broader business solutions.
- Maintain and optimize cloud-based data science environments, including notebooks and version control systems.
- Analyze large datasets, both structured and unstructured, to uncover trends and support decision-making.
- Present findings and insights to non-technical stakeholders, translating complex data into actionable business strategies.
- Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in telematics, data science, and transportation risk modeling.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience and 8 years of relevant work experience
- Master's degree in quantitative discipline (e.g., statistics, applied mathematics, computer science or a related field) and 6 years relevant experience
- Strong experience with Python and SQL, particularly in cloud-based environments.
- Proven ability to work independently and in teams on complex data projects, from inception to delivery.
- Obsessed with the latest developments in machine learning algorithms and data science practices.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Passion for developing high quality models and shipping frequently.
- PhD in a quantitative discipline.
- Actuarial designation or progress toward one.
- Prior experience in auto insurance, particularly in cost modeling and working with large datasets (semi-structured or unstructured).
- Hands-on experience with telematics data and signal processing.
- Please note that the final salary offered will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills, and experience, as well as the internal salary structure at Quanata. - Paid Time Off: All employees accrue four weeks of PTO in their first year of employment. New parents receive twelve weeks of fully paid parental leave which may be taken within one year after the birth and/or adoption of a child. The twelve weeks is applicable to both birthing and non-birthing parent.

- Location: We are a remote-first company for most positions so you may work from anywhere you like in the U.S, excluding U.S. territories. For most positions, occasional travel may be requested or encouraged but is not required. Some positions might require travel per the job description provided to the employee. Employees based in the San Francisco Bay Area or in Providence, Rhode Island may commute to one of our local offices as desired.
- Hours: We maintain core meeting hours from 9AM - 2PM Pacific time for collaborating with team members across all time zones.
