The Centre for Land Conservation (CLC/Centre) is an independent, registered charity dedicated to building a stronger land conservation community. Working with our partners we are advancing respectful conservation and stewardship, through collaboration, innovation, and by promoting responsible practices.
The Centre for Land Conservation has established a Certification of Excellence program based on the Canadian Land Trust Standards and Practices. This program aims to validate the quality of the work of conservation organizations and trusts, and to strengthen public, donor and government confidence in our sector.
To implement this program, we are looking for people who have acted as administrators, employees, volunteers, advisors or partners for conservation organizations and trusts in across Canada.
Conservation Excellence Certification Program
The Certification Program’s objectives are to:
The CLC is seeking knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented volunteers to join our team of certification program assessors. Volunteers will work closely with conservation leaders across Canada, gaining hands-on experience in the nation's diverse environmental sector. This opportunity will allow them to engage directly with experts, building a strong network within the conservation community.
Assessors will receive thorough training from industry experts, covering all aspects of the assessment process. This training will equip them with the skills needed to evaluate conservation efforts confidently and will provide valuable experience for future or developing careers in environmental fields.
On average, each assessor will spend 16 hours on each assessment that they take on and once they have completed 4 assessments, they have the opportunity to become a lead assessor. As an appraiser, you'll be free to accept or decline certain appraisals, depending on your availability. You'll also be able to choose which organizational functions you'd like to work on, according to your interests and expertise.

Conservation Excellence Certification Program

- Assist land trusts to identify and mitigate risk by enhancing and bolstering their capacity to meet and surpass the Canadian Land Trust Standards and Practices, highlighting the additional benefits they can gain.
- Provide assurance to government, and private foundations, and donors that their conservation investments are well-managed.
- Cultivate widespread and voluntary engagement in the program among land trusts and highlight the benefits of participation to encouraging active and eager involvement.
- Establish a robust and replicable process that ensures efficiency for participating land trusts.

Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments of land trust operations, governance, and stewardship practices as part of an assessment team.
- Review documentation, policies, and procedures related to land trust activities.
- Provide constructive feedback and recommendations to enhance land trust performance.
- Collaborate with other assessors and program staff to ensure comprehensive evaluations.
- Experience or strong interest in land trust operations, governance, or related fields.
- Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- English and/or French proficiency required
