Roo (www.roo.vet) has created the first B2B labor marketplace in animal healthcare that connects veterinary professionals with hospitals through innovative technology, with opportunities to expand and offer more opportunities for both our demand & supply of users.

Our dynamic platform enables hospitals to fulfill personnel needs in real time, while allowing high-quality veterinary professionals to secure work at the click of a button. Beyond the platform, Roo represents a growing opportunity to help hospitals meet all-things staffing, and a growing community of resilient vet industry professionals who value flexibility and work-life balance, in addition to providing the best possible outcomes for clients and their pets.

Our aim is to combine experienced healthcare expertise with Silicon Valley talent to shake up this industry and change the way veterinarians and hospitals work!

About the Role

Roo is looking for a Director of Engineering to lead, mentor, and scale our engineering team while driving technical excellence, execution, and innovation. This role is an equal blend of people management, squad execution oversight, and technical leadership, including hands-on guidance in AI coding adoption. As a key leader in the organization, you will be instrumental in ensuring our teams deliver high-quality, scalable solutions that empower animal hospitals, veterinarians, and veterinary technicians.

Your Responsibilities

People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of engineers, fostering a strong engineering culture.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development discussions, ensuring engineers have clear growth opportunities.
  • Oversee performance rubrics—structured frameworks that define expectations for different engineering levels—to ensure fair assessments and continuous growth.
  • Manage escalations and performance management processes, ensuring that teams meet high standards of excellence and accountability.

Squad Execution & Delivery

  • Drive alignment between engineering, product, and design teams to ensure seamless execution of our roadmap.
  • Oversee technical project execution across multiple squads, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Monitor team progress, remove blockers, and improve engineering processes to drive efficiency and collaboration.
  • Champion best practices in software development, including CI/CD, automated testing, and scalable architecture.

Technical Leadership & Innovation

  • Provide hands-on technical guidance, especially in driving AI-powered coding adoption and modern engineering best practices.
  • Collaborate with the CTO to shape technical strategy, architecture, and stack evolution as we scale.
  • Balance pragmatic decision-making with long-term technical vision, ensuring our platform remains robust and adaptable.
  • Maintain high standards in security, performance, and maintainability while continuously identifying opportunities for improvement.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience as a full-stack software engineer with JavaScript, React, and Node.js.
  • 3+ years of engineering leadership experience, managing teams and scaling engineering functions in a high-growth environment.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering teams through a mix of people management, technical mentorship, and execution oversight.
  • Strong experience with TypeScript, SQL databases, AWS, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience driving AI coding adoption and leveraging automation for software development efficiency.
  • Familiarity with marketplace, SaaS, or B2B platforms is a plus.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, communication, and leadership abilities.

About You

  • A strategic thinker who balances short-term execution with long-term innovation.
  • A people-first leader who excels at coaching, mentoring, and enabling engineers to do their best work.
  • Highly collaborative with a bias for action, thriving in a fast-moving, dynamic startup environment.
  • Passionate about building a high-performance engineering culture that attracts and retains top talent.
  • A champion of using AI to build scalable, maintainable, and high-quality software development.
