About InquirED

inquirED was founded by teachers with the mission of bringing rigorous and joyful learning to every student. We’re a fast-growing startup, serving more educators and students every day. Inquiry Journeys, our elementary social studies curriculum, is now used in schools and districts in 30+ states to help students develop deep social studies content knowledge and the inquiry skills that are essential for a thriving democracy. Building on this success, we’re now developing a humanities curriculum to further our mission. Join our team of designers, advocates, guides, thought leaders, and makers to help us make an even greater impact. Together we can shape the future of education.

Description

About the role

The Project

  • We’re building an integrated K–5 Core ELA and Core social studies curriculum that meets the diverse needs of K-5 learners and makes it possible for every elementary teacher to fit meaningful social studies into the day without sacrificing literacy goals. We are seeking an experienced ELA curriculum specialist with demonstrated skill in designing instructional supports for multilingual learners and students with disabilities, as well as in designing responsive instruction informed by student data. This role centers on the 0-to-1 design, codification, and development of various flexible learning supports — a dynamic suite of differentiated, time-flexible instructional materials that reinforce, extend, and personalize instruction.
  • This project is ambitious in both scope and timeline. To meet these goals, we are prioritizing candidates who bring a strong understanding of ELA pedagogy and instructional design, and have experience leveraging AI tools to generate, iterate, and refine content at scale.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • You believe all students can access knowledge-rich, grade-level, complex texts and curriculum when the right supports are in place. You can put yourself in the shoes of a teacher using our program, anticipating the robust learner supports teachers will need on a daily basis and designing instructional responses to hypothetical student performance data.
  • You’re able to step inside one of our units, modules, or lessons and, after considering the learning goals, standards, and cognitive demands, comfortably identify the flexible supports that belong within Tier 1 instruction, as well as the proactive and responsive supports that should live outside of Tier 1 instruction (think: targeted scaffolds and activities for multilingual learners, small-group interventions for students needing additional support, or purposeful independent practice opportunities).
  • Importantly, you move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to multilingual learner supports, demonstrating a strong grasp of how language abilities vary by English proficiency level across domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and designing language-learning strategies that are purposefully tailored to both students’ needs and instructional goals. You understand the diverse learning profiles of students with disabilities, and the instructional strategies, scaffolds, and supports that align with specific cognitive, language, executive-functioning, or processing needs.
  • You understand that the most effective curriculum supports are not only research-based and instructionally sound, but also feasible and teacher-friendly, designed with a clear awareness of real-world time constraints, classroom structures, and practical implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the 0-to-1 design and codification of our “Flexible Learning Supports” model, defining the purpose, structure, and use cases for this suite of resources, instructional blocks, and protocols.
  • Design and develop high-quality content for the product’s Flexible Learning Supports, such as robust guidance for multilingual learners (including designated ELD supports), proactive scaffolds for upcoming lessons, responsive extensions based on student needs and progress monitoring, repeatable self-directed activities, and materials such as readables, fluency routines, and independent reading supports.
  • Use hypothetical student performance data to inform the design of responsive supports, ensuring Flexible Learning Supports effectively address common learning needs that will arise based on our formative and summative assessments.
  • Work in close coordination with the broader curriculum development team to ensure tight alignment between Flexible Learning Supports and the learning goals, standards, texts, and content of the Tier 1 structured daily lessons, and provide clear guidance on the types of supports that should be embedded within daily instruction versus designed as adjacent components.
  • Act as part Product Manager, part Project Manager, and part Content Designer to lead the design and refinement of internal frameworks that define how Flexible Learning Supports are structured, sequenced, and tagged for effective use, as well as how they are integrated into the inquirED platform ecosystem.
  • Rapidly prototype lesson and activity content using a combination of traditional curriculum design methods and AI-powered tools and workflows, which you will train and refine to meet the specific goals and criteria of this project.
  • Critically evaluate and iterate on AI-generated content to ensure alignment with evidence-based ELA practices, grade-level standards, and English Language Development best practices, balancing instructional integrity with speed and scalability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., editorial, materials design, design/UX) to ensure content is accessible, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.

Requirements

  • A “first principles” thinker who can leverage your deep expertise in foundational literacy, differentiation, and scaffolding for multilingual learners and students with learning differences to create something that doesn’t yet exist in the world.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and white space to determine processes and refine outputs with great independence
  • 5+ years of experience designing programs for diverse learners in K–5 ELA; Candidates with a strong background in K-2 will be preferred.
  • Proven ability to design instructional materials supporting multilingual learners that are aligned with English language development expectations or standards (e.g., WIDA, CA ELD), with scaffolded supports by proficiency level and integrated content and language instruction.
  • Multilingual Learner Credentials: Training or certification in multilingual learner instruction, such as an ESL/ENL degree or licensure, TESOL certification, or a degree in Bilingual Education; knowledge of the WIDA Framework or CA ELD Framework; and training in models such as the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), GLAD, or other research-based approaches to language instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience designing Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports for students with varying learning needs, using student data to tailor instruction, organize groupings, and inform classroom systems. Additional expertise designing or implementing modular, flexible-use instructional supports (e.g., small group lessons, intervention blocks, stations/centers) is highly valued.
  • Comfort and curiosity in using AI tools (as well as other technologies and applications) to increase scale and speed without compromising instructional quality.
  • Strong project management skills; able to manage timelines, juggle multiple deliverables at once, and maintain momentum on a fast-moving, multi-year project.

Preferred Additional Qualifications/Credentials

  • Special Education & Inclusive Design: Special education degree and/or licensure, and/or expertise in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), or Response to Intervention (RTI) frameworks; bonus if you have training in evidence-based reading intervention programs (e.g., Orton-Gillingham or other structured literacy approaches).
  • You will likely use: AI content generation and editing platforms, including proprietary internal tools; Google Suite and collaborative content development systems (e.g., Airtable); Curriculum tagging systems and rubrics aligned to focus standards
