The Technology and Innovation (T&I) Ministry supports GoA departments with information management and technology (IMT) leadership and expertise in IMT services delivery, security, and corporate investment management that enable the GoA to meet business goals and objectives.
The Innovation, Privacy, and Policy division, oversees the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy, protects personal information, and guides the ethical use of data. We advance strategies and policies for data delivery, content management, and privacy-related programs, ensuring responsible governance for Alberta Innovates and the Alberta Enterprise Corporation. We aim to drive meaningful change and foster a culture of innovation and ethical data use across the province.

Role Responsibilities
Are you passionate about privacy and ready to make a difference? As a Privacy Advisor with the GoA, you’ll take the lead in protecting personal information and promoting a culture of privacy awareness across government departments. You’ll play a key role in maintaining compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act by providing critical advice, guidance, and support on privacy issues. In this role, you’ll address privacy-related inquiries and manage privacy risk assessments and incidents, ensuring that government departments follow best practices in the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.

A related two-year diploma and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; or a minimum of six (6) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

Your Key Responsibilities Include
- Responding to privacy inquiries, collaborating with stakeholders, and ensuring FOIP Act compliance.
- Investigating privacy incidents, assessing the complexity and severity of breaches, and guiding stakeholders in resolution and mitigation efforts.
- Providing direction and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders on best practices for managing personal information.
- Preparing and distributing FOIP training materials, co-facilitating sessions to raise awareness and understanding of privacy best practices.
- Conducting privacy risk assessments and advising on compliance requirements related to Personal Information Banks.
- Analyzing complex privacy issues and supporting data protection efforts across departments to strengthen organizational privacy measures.
- Excellent communication skills to simplify complex privacy principles.
- Strong interpersonal skills to foster trust, negotiate solutions, and resolve conflicts.
- Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills for independent, impactful decision-making.
- Exceptional attention to detail for thorough analysis of records and privacy issues.
- Strong organizational skills and adaptability to manage a high volume of privacy files and respond to evolving privacy needs.
Qualifications
Required:
- A related university degree (e.g., Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration and Law), supplemented by at least two (2) years of related experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
- Cover letter detailing how your skills and experience align with the role's responsibilities, used to assess writing and communication skills.
- Knowledge of privacy legislation.
- Experience in privacy specific roles.
- Familiarity with records management, privacy and security concepts and principles.
- Experience developing and delivering training sessions.

Additional Position Details
- This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
- While this position is eligible for remote work, the successful candidate must reside in Alberta to work remotely.
- Pre-Employment checks will be conducted to assess candidates’ suitability. These checks may include (but are not limited to): references, criminal record check, academic verification, etc.
- Testing will be administered as part of our assessment process.
