Senior Specialist, Copywriting & Communications

Location: Remote


Hiring Range: This position's hiring range is anticipated to be $65,000 to $75,000 annually, depending on experience, plus great benefits!


Interviews will occur weekly until the position is filled



Summary: The Senior Specialist, Copywriting & Communications, Best Friends Network, develops and writes business-to-business web, print, and press content that focuses on issues that are imperative for achieving no-kill 2025 and relevant to Best Friends’ B2B audience. This role will develop a variety of written materials, conduct research to support B2B communications efforts, and partner with other internal Best Friends Teams to advance B2B efforts. This position will also contribute to stories highlighting thought leaders and other outreach work throughout the animal welfare movement



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Draft short and long-form content for B2B audiences and B2C audiences related to B2B topics and updates. Pitch and write assigned pieces about critical animal welfare issues that help network partners successfully work and accelerate towards a no-kill nation by 2025 and support the Network Team’s goals, strategies, and campaigns.


• Share final content with interviewees so they can share on social media and solicit feedback from them on any positive impact on their organization. Track partner touchpoints in organizational CRM system.


• Working with relevant internal communications teams as needed, draft B2B press releases, collateral, short and long form web and print content, video scripts, talking points, and blog postings. Copyedit content written by the Network Team as needed.


• Conduct background research for podcast host and draft backgrounder, episode titles, and episode descriptions.


• Participate in weekly content meetings to align with other departments/divisions focused on communications and identify story and editorial opportunities related to strategic need. Coordinate with Network Experience team to receive guidance on key topics and with Network Engagement team to align content with content calendar.


• Communicate with business intelligence team to ensure that lifesaving data and related information is thoughtfully and appropriately incorporated into messaging and communications.


• Provide writing guidance and support for subject matter experts and/or other communications channels, including the Best Friends Magazine and B2C web and social. Coordinate internal communication efforts for the Network team including BFConnect submissions and Workplace posts.


• Stay abreast of latest writing and communications trends related to similar organizations and the animal welfare field to ensure writing excellence and best practices across the organization.


• Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience:

• This position requires heavy internal cross-divisional collaboration, external partner communications and relationship building, and an understanding of B2B and B2C communications.


• Exceptional writing, copyediting, and ghostwriting skills for several audiences, purposes, and channels in a variety of styles required. Comfort with development of short and long form content.


• Ability to simplify complex data/science/topics into succinct content that target audiences find compelling and relatable. Strong research experience and ability to draft talking points / backgrounder documents.


• Demonstrated ability to monitor various channels and connect consistently with peers and partners to identify story topic ideas and opportunities.


• Ability to follow and uphold brand voice across channels and styles. High comfort level with peer collaboration as well as feedback, edits, and suggestions from peers.


• Familiarity with omni-channel strategies and executing tasks within comprehensive communications plans with multiple audiences and goals. Ability to meet assignment deadlines and prioritize competing demands.


• Experience with animal shelters, animal rescues or municipal governments is required.


• Excellent time management, project management, and self-regulation skills are necessary.


• Demonstrated experience using remote work collaboration and communication tools like Office365, Asana, Teams, etc.


• Bilingual in Spanish a plus.


• Ad buying experience a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm, and hand motion.


• Valid driver's license, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.


• Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
