Job Description Summary:
This position performs abstracting, coding, and analysis of data on cancer patients for reporting to the State of Montana and National Cancer Data Base. Provides lifetime follow-up on cancer patients and ensures adherence to data management protocols to ensure regulatory compliance standards


Qualifications:


  • Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) required. Graduate of cancer registry management or health information management program preferred.

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in cancer program development and national accreditation standards required.

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with multidisciplinary teams in a hospital environment required.

  • Knowledge of cancer disease process, cancer diagnostic methods and procedures, composition of the patient record, data interpretation, statistical and analytical skills required.

  • Knowledge of ICD-O coding, anatomy, physiology, SEER, AJCC, TNM and Collaborative Staging and treatment required.

  • Previous work experience with Cancer Registry software and Electronic Medical Record software required.

  • Possess strong database skills preferred.

  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.

  • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.




Job Specific Duties:


  • Follows standard procedures for cancer case finding to include identifying cases of malignant disease and reportable benign tumors per department procedure.



  • Coordinates with stakeholders to request and obtain pathology reports, medical records, and office charts.

  • Performs abstracting of cancer cases following requirements of American College of Surgeons, Montana Central Tumor Registry, and Logan Heath Medical Center (LHMC).

  • Obtains core information from the patient's medical records/office charts, per department procedure.

  • Accurately codes topography and morphology, stage, and extent of disease of tumor cases and enters data into cancer registry system.

  • Assures cancer cases are abstracted within department protocol timeline.

  • Maintains quality control of case findings, abstracting, coding, follow up and data processing procedures by performing chart reviews per department procedure. Ensures compliance with requirements to achieve and maintain an accredited cancer program as set forth by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC).

  • Assembles and disseminates data collection in the cancer registry. Processes requests for data and prepares narrative reports and graphic presentations of data. Assists the cancer committee in developing criteria for patient care evaluations, Performance Improvement Plans (PCE/PIP) and annual goals.

  • Supports the preparation of annual reports and call for data as required by ACoS and NCDB. Actively participates in the Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS) and follows-up with treating physicians on RQRS Alerts. Prepares and submits batches of new and updated cases to the Montana Central Tumor Registry per department protocol.

  • Serves as physician contact in scheduling cases for presentation at physician-led tumor board. Notifies appropriate departments of cases scheduled and coordinates information, formulates case lists, and distributes to stakeholders.

  • Provides staff assistance, attends, and monitors attendance for CME, and forwards evaluations to Education department related to the tumor board.

  • Serves as liaison to ensure approved cancer program status is maintained with all standards met. Performs ongoing involvement with patient care guidelines/Performance Improvement Plans (PCE/PIP), from development to monitoring, as appropriate.

  • Follows patients to obtain end results information on the quality of life and length of survival per department protocol. Updates data in cancer registry system per ACoS and CoC standards and department protocol.

Logan Health operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed
