This position works in the Facilities Management Recreation – Kensington Arena organizational unit. This is combined technical, operational and building service work performed on an assigned shift in year-round multipurpose sports arenas and food service outlets. The work includes performing routine repairs and minor maintenance duties on refrigeration and ice making equipment; performing unskilled and semi-skilled building maintenance and janitorial tasks; enforcing arena rules and regulations and supporting program service delivery. Considerable independence of judgment and action is exercised within established practices and procedures, with performance reviewed by a supervisor for technical adequacy, conformance to established practices and ability to meet time schedules. Performs related work as required.


Qualifications include up to high school graduation plus completion of technical courses leading to an Ice Facility Operator’s Certificate plus sound related experience in ice-making operations and building services work or an equivalent combination of training and experience. You will have considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in ice-making and refrigeration operations; and sound knowledge of the materials, methods, tools and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work. As an Arena Services Worker, you will have the ability to operate ice-making, refrigeration, and surfacing and cleaning equipment, and perform routine repairs and minor maintenance duties. You will also have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and the public, and to deal tactfully and firmly with groups and individuals to ensure observance of rules and regulations. Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Ice Facility Operator’s Certificate, and St. John’s Emergency First Aid Certificate are required. Please note that a Police Information Check is required for this position.


Clause 6 Application of Seniority:

Appointments to regular full time, temporary full time, regular part time and temporary part time positions shall be determined by seniority as defined by the greatest length of service in the specific posted job. These appointments shall be subject to the successful passing of the skill test(s) applicable to the classification, that they are not currently subject to a performance management plan, and have no discipline or recorded safety infractions in the previous eighteen (18) months. First consideration will be given to internal applicants (Clause 6 Application) and then open to external applicants.


Schedule: 40 hours weekly; Monday from 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM; Tuesday to Wednesday from 3:30 PM – 11:30 PM; Saturday to Sunday from 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Shifts range between Monday to Sunday, 5:30 AM – 1:30 AM)
