Project Director – Major Building Construction

Location: Edmonton, AB (with occasional project travel)

MatchBox Consulting Group is partnering with a leading general contractor to identify an experienced Project Director to oversee the successful delivery of large-scale building projects across Western Canada.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for a proven construction professional with extensive experience managing complex ICI projects valued at $100M+. The successful candidate will play a key role in project strategy, client relationships, business development, and team leadership while ensuring projects are delivered safely, profitably, and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight throughout the full project lifecycle, from pursuit and preconstruction through completion and closeout.
  • Lead major project teams to achieve schedule, budget, quality, and profitability objectives.
  • Develop project execution strategies and ensure resources are aligned to support successful delivery.
  • Monitor project performance, identify risks, and implement solutions to maintain project health.

Client & Business Development

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, trade partners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Support business development initiatives and contribute to winning new opportunities.
  • Participate in proposal development, contract negotiations, and project pursuits as required.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure projects meet all safety, environmental, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, contract administration, and project controls.
  • Guide project teams through critical decision-making and issue resolution.
  • Drive continuous improvement and best practices across project delivery.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Mentor, coach, and develop project management professionals.
  • Support talent acquisition, succession planning, and team growth initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture focused on accountability and results.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in the construction industry.
  • 10+ years in a senior project management or project leadership capacity with a General Contractor.
  • Proven success delivering large-scale ICI, commercial, institutional, or mixed-use projects valued at $100M+.
  • Strong understanding of project delivery, construction operations, risk management, and financial controls.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex stakeholder relationships.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
