This is a critical role ensuring that all ground disturbance work for our urban forest operations is safe, compliant, and ready to go. You will be the point person for utility checks, documentation, and coordination with various contractors and internal teams. The primary purpose of the Replacement Planting Landscape Technician I is to guarantee that all ground disturbance requirements are met before any forestry work begins. This role involves the meticulous coordination of utility checks, interpreting the resulting documentation, and deciding what additional mitigation, such as hydrovac services, is needed to ensure site safety. You will be organizing all ground disturbance documentation for forestry crews and contractors, and planning all of the One Call, hydrovac, and OSCAM work to align with the operational work plan. Success in this position requires excellent communication with forestry crew leaders to align timelines with their day-to-day scheduling.

What will you do?

  • Lead Site Readiness: Secure utility checks and guarantee sites are compliant and prepared ahead of all forestry ground disturbance work
  • Submit and prioritize utility locate requests through Alberta OneCall and other providers based on operational timelines
  • Interpret utility documents and independently decide when hydrovac services are required to daylight utilities to ensure site safety
  • Issue Ground Disturbance Permits: Provide guidance and formally issue ground disturbance permits and checklists to forestry crew leaders and contractors
  • Manage Hydrovac Services: Contact, schedule, track progress, and provide instructions to hydrovac contractors
  • Align Work Schedules: Coordinate and plan all One Call, hydrovac, and OSCAM work to align the timing of permits with the overall operational work plan
  • Communicate Timelines: Work closely with and communicate accurate timelines to all forestry crew leaders scheduling day-to-day operations
  • Maintain daily communication with external utility providers
  • Monitor ground disturbance activities throughout projects and ensure all work adheres to OHS Ground Disturbance Standards and Forestry SOPs
  • Mark and Map Sites: Accurately mark sites in the field, interpret maps and GIS inventory, and edit tree data within the GIS system
  • Assist with other other replacement planting tasks as needed and time allows


Qualifications:

  • Completion of 2 year diploma in arboriculture, landscape, architecture or related field
  • 2 years experience in landscaping related position(s), experience coordinating work/dealing with contractors and dealing with complex timelines


Assets:

  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification


Skills required for success:

  • Able to effectively and tactfully communicate with internal and external collaborators and community partners
  • Prior experience interpreting GIS inventory, maps, and spreadsheets to identify trees and sites in the field
  • Knowledge of arboriculture and landscape design
  • Knowledge of OHS Ground Disturbance Standards and the Traffic Safety Act and Bylaw
  • Ability to enter data into spreadsheet, use website applications, make maps, interpret maps, assess trees for health, and identify trees
  • Ability to implement and to ensure compliance with the City’s policies and procedures
  • Represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful and safe manner
  • Proven ability to solve problems, make independent decisions (such as when a site is not safe to dig), and prioritize tasks under constant deadline pressure
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong computer skills, including the ability to use website applications, enter data into spreadsheets, create maps, and interpret maps
  • Research and problem-solving skills to gather information, make decisions, and develop recommendations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment where work depends on cooperation

Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) is a requirement of this position
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C, AED Ground Disturbance Level 2, and WHIMIS certifications

  • This role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions
