Conservation Officer - Dawson City and Mayo

This posting will staff one permanent position in Dawson City and another position in Mayo. It may also be used to fill future vacancies in other Yukon communities. Successful candidates will be required to relocate to the specified community upon hire.

Your role

A Conservation Officer is a member of a multidisciplinary team who plays a vital role in protecting natural resources, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring public safety. This position is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of public services and field operations, with a focus on enforcement, public safety/education and emergency response associated with territorial, federal, and intergovernmental conservation programs.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, you’ll need to demonstrate how you meet the following qualifications in your resume. Be sure to highlight how the experience you have acquired aligns with the ‘must haves’ for this position, including the month and year for each work experience entry. Selection for further consideration is based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Degree or diploma, from a recognized post-secondary institution, in: Natural Resources Law Enforcement, Conservation and Environmental Law Enforcement, Natural Resource Protection, Resource Management Officer Technology, Fish and Wildlife Management, or Biological Sciences or enrolled in such a program with a completion date prior to May 2027.
  • Experience in an enforcement or compliance-based position, with experience handling complaints and legal reports. Conducting investigations, laying charges, etc. preferably related to the renewable resource field is an asset.
  • Experience effectively handling complaints regarding a variety of human/wildlife conflicts, including live capture and euthanizing wildlife; and experience conducting chemical immobilizations is an asset
  • Experience working in a remote community, preferably in a northern setting, is an asset

READING COMPREHENSION to interpret and apply federal and territorial, legislation and policies, agreements related to resource management.

PROFESSIONAL WRITING to meet a high standard required to accurately and cohesively document and prepare reports.

CURRENT RESEARCH & INVESTIGATION SKILLS to successfully conduct a wide variety of investigations.

Conditions of Employment: Your appointment will not be finalized until the following conditions of employment have been met :

  • A valid Yukon Driver’s License (Class 5) or equivalent.
  • A current Firearms Possession and Acquisition License.
  • Security clearance through the RCMP.
  • Medical Clearance associated to the role and duties of a law enforcement officer.
  • A Psychological Assessment.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certifications, or the ability to obtain these within eight months of employment.
  • Successful completion of PARE test or equivalent

Additionally, you will need to declare any convictions under the Criminal Code of Canada that haven't received an official pardon, as well as any violations of relevant legislation, such as the Animal Protection Act, Environment Act, Fisheries Act, Wildlife Act and more.

Successful candidates will also be required to attend and successfully complete department recognized Conservation Officer Enforcement Training (e.g. Western Canadian Law Enforcement Academy).

Job Requirements: Travel throughout the territory in varying weather conditions, working independently, shift work, including working weekends and wearing a uniform provided by the department.
