About The Position
Newlight is looking for an all-round mechanical design engineer to own and lead mechanical systems development!
Own and lead all mechanical systems for Newlight's hydrogen-injection retrofit on customer vessels and in our in-house test cells.
You'll take concepts to install-ready hardware: architecture, design, drawings, P&IDs, vendor coordination, and on-deck integration.
What You Will Do
- Define subsystem and system-level mechanical architecture for the hydrogen injection package and auxiliaries (piping, mounts, enclosures, heat-rejection, ventilation)
- Produce clean, release-grade CAD and drawings (assembly, detail, weldments) with full GD&T, BOMs, and revision control
- Create and maintain PFDs/P&IDs, line lists, spec sheets, and mechanical ICDs
- Design junction boxes/enclosures, skids, brackets, vibration-isolated mounts, and serviceable layouts for tight marine spaces
- Size and route piping/tubing (H₂, air, coolant, fuel), select valves, regulators, hoses, fittings, and supports to marine standards
- Run FEA for brackets, frames, and lifting points; basic thermal checks for heat sinks, exchangers, and ventilation paths
- Plan and execute vessel integrations: surveys, interface checks, 3D scans/overlays, install sequencing, access/maintenance studies
- Write assembly/test procedures; support FAT/HAT/SAT and commissioning on site
- Manage vendors and fabricators; review quotes, DFM/DFA, tolerances, and coatings
- Drive safety by design: materials, corrosion control, fire protection, ventilation, drain/bleed, and hazardous-area considerations
- Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering (or related)
- 3+ years in marine, industrial, or transportation hardware—small teams where you shipped real product
- Hands-on: comfortable in the shop and on the vessel—measuring, cutting, drilling, fitting, torquing, leak-checking
- Fluent with CAD and drawings; you sweat clear callouts, tolerances, and serviceability
- Piping/tubing design for gases and liquids; supports, expansion, and vibration
- Skid/enclosure design, sheet metal, weldments, and machined parts
- PFD/P&ID creation and change control
- Materials/coatings for marine (SS, CuNi, Al, duplex, primers/epoxies)
- FEA for static strength and vibration; basic thermal analysis
- Factory and field installs, troubleshooting, and root-cause
- SolidWorks (parts/assemblies/weldments/drawings), SolidWorks PDM
- AutoCAD / AutoCAD Plant 3D (P&IDs, layout), Navisworks or equivalent for fit checks
- ANSYS or SolidWorks Simulation for FEA. Basic CFD familiarity is a plus
- Standard metrology and assembly tools (calipers, torque wrenches, pressure/vac/leak test kits)
- Marine standards experience: ABS, DNV, IMO IGF Code, USCG
- Hydrogen or alternative fuels (CNG, methanol, ammonia) and their safety envelopes
- Vibration/shock isolation design for engines and rotating machinery
- Experience with 3D scanning and point-cloud to CAD workflows
- Vendor/fabrication networks in sheet metal, machining, tubing, and coatings
- HAZID/HAZOP participation and risk-reduction by design
- Competitive salary and equity package
- Ownership of all mechanical systems from concept to installation
- Work on cutting-edge hydrogen technology for maritime decarbonization
- Hands-on work environment with vessel integrations and field commissioning
- Opportunity for professional growth and leadership development
Join our team and lead the mechanical design of systems that will revolutionize maritime sustainability.
