Student Services Supervisor - Attendance & Truancy, McKinney-Vento & Foster Care, and Home Services
GENERAL INFORMATION Title: Student Services Supervisor Department: Student Services Salary Grade: ADM Pay Schedule 3
FLSA Status: Exempt Site/Location: Administration Building Reports to: Director of Student Services Date: 06/03/2026 POSITION SUMMARY
Student Services Supervisor - Attendance & Truancy, McKinney-Vento & Foster Care, and Home Services will work with principals, staff, students, and families and report to the Chief/Director of Student Services. The Supervisor will ensure fidelity and consistency with attendance and truancy practices at all school sites within the division. The Supervisor gathers attendance data for state reporting and analyzes data to follow trends and patterns in order to increase student attendance. The Supervisor oversees the school-based attendance clerks, truancy staff, school social workers, and the McKinney-Vento liaison within the school division. The Supervisor will attend ITRT meetings and follow up with court proceedings.
Essential Functions
- Develops a district-wide approach to promoting the importance of regular student attendance by implementing appropriate strategies.
- Analyzes and provides data regarding attendance to teachers, families, and students.
- Respond to questions regarding student attendance zones.
- Assist Interagency Truancy Review Team (ITRT) with the identification of chronic absenteeism, strategies to implement, and communication feedback loop to teachers.
- Create programs that promote and reinforce consistent attendance with students, families, teachers, and administrators.
- Stay abreast of laws and guidelines regarding attendance and chronic absenteeism.
- Collects data to analyze and develop recommendations for program improvement.
- Conducts home visits with parents and students to follow up on chronically absent students and gain parental support in students’ educational, behavioral, and social development.
- Manage, oversee, and implement the Home Education Services program.
- Create and provide intervention programs to redirect students toward consistent school attendance.
- Provide recommendations to school leadership regarding appropriate interventions to ensure proper school attendance and prevent school “drop-out” in conjunction with established school and community programs.
- Establish and maintain good cross-component relationships and develop supportive relationships with students and their families.
- Supervises the student support specialist/truancy staff and recommends attendance/truancy policies and procedures.
- Supervises the homeless education liaison and the McKinney Vento grant.
- Interfaces with the appropriate community agencies for cooperative program planning.
- Facilitates or arranges for staff /student development and training programs for a variety of school personnel on topics related to attendance, enrollment, and registration processes.
- Facilitates and implements the school division’s enrollment process, inclusive of division meetings, training, and correspondence with the school community.
- Develop and oversee all grants related to student services, McKinney-Vento, including local, regional, and state alternative education grants.
- Manages home instruction approval, data collection, and reporting.
- Manage homebound/home-based instruction approval, data, collection, and reporting.
- Manage Elementary Reassignment (babysitter hardship) instruction approval, data collection, and reporting.
- Manages Non-Residential approval, data collection, and reporting.
- Oversee field trips.
- Monitors program budgets and researches sources of additional funding.

- A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field is required. Administrative experience and a Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience in the management of truancy prevention efforts and connecting students and families with related services preferred.
- Excellent project management, planning, and communication skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the Virginia code regarding truancy, possess knowledge of prevention strategies, mental health, and substance abuse resources for students, as well as community resources available for homeless students and families.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, and community-based organizations.
- Experience with grant development, monitoring, and management
- The ability to conduct telephone-based or in-person interviews, data collection, and data entry are preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including active listening and emotional intelligence.
- Ability to interact in a non-judgmental manner with culturally diverse populations and persons experiencing a wide range of social conditions.

- Solid knowledge and understanding of accurate and effective record-keeping and time management.
- Solid knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office and Google Drive and ability to learn new technical programs/practices as needed.
- Solid knowledge and understanding of equitable practices that create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for LCS staff, students, and community members.
- Supervises the Attendance Clerks, Student Support Specialists/Truancy, and Homeless Liaison
- Reliable transportation necessary
- Minimal travel within the City of Lynchburg as needed
- Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg as needed
