We are currently expanding our youth employment services and are looking for an experienced Apprenticeship Coach to join our team. This position is dedicated to guiding at-risk young people towards a successful career in the trades.

What You Will Do

As an Apprenticeship Coach, you will play a pivotal role in our multi-dimensional program. You will help youth explore the trades, develop pathways for engaging in trade related occupations, prepare for work in the trades, and foster relationships and opportunities with training or apprenticeship offering organizations. This will include extensive 1:1 support and collaboration across a wide range of stakeholders.

As a critical member of the youth’s support team, you will be committed to the success of each young person and will utilize a strength based, trauma informed, and youth centric approach to create an inclusive, supportive, and positive experience for all. The youth clients you will be coaching could reside anywhere in Alberta, so engagement the clients could be in-person in any of the Prospect offices throughout Alberta, a community location like a school, library or resource centre or virtually over the internet.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist youth aged 16-24 interested in the trades explore different occupations and apprenticeship pathways.
  • Collaborate with each youth to create a personalized action plan outlining all the necessary steps for them to enter an apprenticeship and support them to complete those steps.
  • Foster extensive relationships with community support providers and connect youth with community resources that they may need as they pursue their apprenticeship journey.
  • Support youth in accessing RAP or Careers and Technology Studies (CTS) through their high school, acting as a liaison with career counselors and facilitating the registration process.
  • Offer continuous 1:1 support and coaching throughout the apprenticeship preparation process.
  • Assist youth in engaging with the appropriate training providers to prepare for their apprenticeship.
  • Arrange tours and connections with people working in the trades including with experts such as trade unions, training institutions or local employers.
  • Work with youth to identify preferred employers and help them source apprenticeship opportunities.
  • Provide pre-employment support, including resume/cover letter development, assistance in the application process, and interview support.
  • Provide one-on-one support to troubleshoot difficulties that may arise during their pursuit of trades-related goals.
  • Help youth navigate any challenge they may experience as they engage in a work experience, apprenticeship opportunities, or apprenticeship training. This may include on-the-job support and collaboration with their training provider or employer.

What It Takes To Do This Job

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant program. A Career Development background is an asset and experience working in the trades is highly desirable.
  • Apprenticeship experience and/or journeyman trade certification is an asset.
  • Experience working with youth and utilizing a strength based, trauma informed approach.
  • Experience in pre-employment, essential skill development, and labour market knowledge.
  • Innovative with the ability to take initiative.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Experience with Sales Force is an asset.
  • Professional, driven, charismatic, reliable, and confident individual who thrives under pressure.
  • Exemplary verbal communication with strong business writing skills.
  • Able to take initiative and be resourceful in seeking out community relationships, including the ability to reach out and make connections.
  • Experience with pre-employment strategies and knowledge of the local labour market are considered assets
  • Exposure to diversity and inclusion programs is an asset

Further Notes

  • Must have a valid Alberta Driver’s License (min Class 5) and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Must have access to a reliable cellphone for off-site communications (Prospect will provide a standard monthly technology stipend)
  • Travel throughout Calgary, and Central Alberta is essential to this role with occasional travel to Edmonton
  • All employees must pass a vulnerable sector background check
  • This project is highly flexible and will be delivered at our locations, in the community and, in some cases, virtually. You will be responsive to individual situations and will employ a flexible working model that may include some weekend and evening work
